Here is what I have come to after many years of consideration: Consciousness is a heuristic used by a nervous system to purposely model the physical reality.

Think about the endless discussion about the Perennial Questions, and, in general, the endless going in circles we call Philosophy. I suppose this has the following root cause. The human mind has got the natural and instinctive tendency to think about very complex and abstract concepts and entities, like the [free] will, good and evil, true self, eternal consciousness, destiny of the humankind, also religions and nations, etc., as if they were concrete and fundamental. By the way, this also seems true about the opposite: the most concrete and fundamental concepts and entities known to the humankind, like the symmetry groups of elementary particles, are perceived as highly abstract and complicated.
